Sugar??

Several times today I've been asked if I'd had too much sugar in my coffee this morning. It's not even like I had lots of sleep last night. Could it be that I can see an end to some of the horrendous workload of the last year+??? I dunno, but today was a good day.

I've been playing with the html a wee bit too... found that cute quotes site - no idea what they're gonna be like, but am willing to give it a good shot. I like the one for today - "the first duty of love is to listen" - so if they're all like that, well, it'll be interesting!

A week and a half ago I flew to Wellington (yes, again) for a birthday party (yes, again) - my great aunt's 100th. I also met my 3 week old great niece while I was down there. Imagine that. One day I'll be able to say to her (one day, soon, hopefully the poor tot will have a NAME!!!) "on September 2nd 2005, I gave both you and your 100-year-old great great great aunt a hug and a kiss".

This is what a telegram from the queen looks like:

and this is the great aunt's great great great niece and moi

2 in one week

Based on my recent record, this would have to be a miracle.
I'm avoiding marking exams at the moment, although I have one lot half completed, and another are threatening me from the sofa.

Speaking of the sofa...
My big discovery of the day was this:
I have a cat (no, that's not the discovery).
My cat likes to sit on me.
When I won't cooperate (or go conveniently - to her - to sleep) she likes to sit on furniture near me.
My gorgeous blue sofa collects cat hair like it was worth a fortune.
Image hosted by Photobucket.com
(that's the photo from when I bought them on Trademe)
I've tried vacuuming it, but it sticks like glue (or, at the very least, cat hair)
So, sometime during the week, I had a brainwave. I thought of the bath glovey things I have, that are like wearing a scrubbing brush on your hand, like this
And I thought that it might work really well against the cat hair.
And do you know what??
I was right. It was brilliant:):)
While I listened to and watched the memorial service for David Lange this morning on the tele, I managed to get most of the evidence of Honey off the sofas. Yay!

Yeah, yeah......

Still chuckling at Pete's comment in the last post....I think I woke up the neighbours!
I can take a hint.
Yes, I'm still alive! Haven't felt much like making the effort, sometimes it seems like there's not much happening, and yet, when I look back, I know I've done heaps.
The students are preparing for mock exams starting tomorrow, so it's been full-on getting them ready. (and the students too). At least I only had 2 year levels to organise this year, but I got them back from the printer yest afternoon, and discovered I had forgotten to put the number required on one year level, and so back they go to print some more. I'm glad I didn't discover THAT on the morning of the exam!!!

Oh, and Jupiter is still a feature, yes.... "During August Venus and Jupiter will present an interesting view in the evening sky as the two draw closer and closer together. By the end of the month, they will only be a couple of degrees apart." from RASNZ and here's a northern hemisphere link.

Actually, one of the things I did last week was to set the alarm and get up to watch the shuttle land, on NASA tv on the internet. It was exceptionally cool to hear the conversation between Houston and the Discovery, and I really did feel for them the night previously, when they were put off twice. Eileen Collins managed to not sound too stressed or disappointed, but I bet she was wishing she was home already! Someone at work had told me when to look in the sky to see the 2 of them (Discovery attached to the ISS) going overhead, a few days before, so I was out in the garden in the freezing cold, watching the right point in the sky at the right time. It was amazing - to think how fast they were travelling, to see them, and to go inside and see what was happening, live, on tv. WOW.

Nora - I'm turning into an astronomical-geek. My year 11's have opted to do astronomy for their final module, so *warning*.. it could get worse before it gets better!!!!!

Occultation of Jupiter

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
I didn't know that was what it was called, but it happened on Thursday night. Jupiter (the tiny dot)was seen to move behind the moon from the dark side. It reappeared on schedule about an hour later.

I tried out all sorts of combinations of settings on my camera, and this was the best result. I was pleased with it, anyway!

PS..

I came 4th= in the rugby picks competition. Feel VERY pleased with that. The top 4 were all women - the guys on staff didn't get a look-in! I'm sure they'll say that was because they were far too busy playing to spend time thinking about their picks.

Not much..

..to post about at the mo. It's all work work work.
That may change next weekend, of course. The big party arrives. All us family members with our round birthdays & a big get-together in Wellington. We've done quite well in the last year or two for getting together in one place. The intervals between events are getting smaller. Sometime between now and then I must find a. a memento of my favourite decade (what on EARTH am I going to take???) and b. a bunch of photos for a montage - eek!! Oh, and WHAT to wear????? I feel quite special, as a number of friends are making quite an effort - 2 flying with me from Auckland, and one coming from Dunedin, along with those who are more local to the party venue.

Take a quiz...

Found this quiz on Darren's and Pete's blogs...
I'm highly amused! Imagine being as fundamentalist as you are existentialist??!!!!
You scored as Cultural Creative. Cultural Creatives are probably the newest group to enter this realm. You are a modern thinker who tends to shy away from organized religion but still feels as if there is something greater than ourselves. You are very spiritual, even if you are not religious. Life has a meaning outside of the rational.

Pentecost.....

It's amazing how sometimes everything knits together to give a bigger picture sometimes. This weekend seems to have had a theme - but it's only in looking back over it that I can see it.
It started with Hot Air Ballooning (at last!!!) at the crack of dawn on Saturday morning. The balloon depends entirely on the wind currents, and it is the skill of the operator, causing it to rise or lower to catch the wind going in the desirable direction, which causes the balloon to have any direction at all.

Then, this morning, I drove a close friend out to the airport, to travel to England to live for a while. When she ticked the "leaving the country permanently" box, I cried, and again when she went through the gates. I will miss her a lot - we have had much common ground in our family histories, and shared a lot of hard times. The mastery of flight, and utilising the aerodynamics and lift and all that stuff, means she's now nearly in KL, and probably more than ready to hit the bed in her hotel.

And tonight we celebrated Pentecost. The imagery people often have is the flames, but I think of the rushing wind. During the course of the prayer stations, I thought of a poem I met in my youth, by Ulrich Shaffer, from Into your Light. I don't think I am remembering it correctly or completely, but here goes:

"I am persuaded by the dandelion
to take the wings of the updrift
to fly
to parachute into enemy territory
to fall to the ground
to be trampled on
to die
and so
to give birth to a whole generation of flyers."

ANZAC

Just returned from the dawn ANZAC service at the Auckland War Memorial - brrrrr. Autumn has definately arrived. We followed the full moon all the way to the domain, and were gobsmacked at how many others were following the same path. The 10-year-old God-daughter and I had a bit of a walk, to get to the Cenotaph, and we missed the arrival parade of veterans. However, it was pretty special just to be there, in the cold dawn, with so many others. The Herald estimates 2000, but I think that's extremely conservative. I'd say more like 4 or 5000. (there were FAR more there than the population of my school, which is 2200-ish). Still nothing like the 20,000 estimated to arrive at Anzac Cove in Turkey this year.
It was pretty amazing to stand while the last post was played, and the flags on top of the Museum were lowered to half mast, and have that many people silent for a whole, precisely measured, minute, and then to turn round and see the dawn breaking over Rangitoto. Click here for Dick Hubbard's dedication, and here for the address by the Governor General, Dame Silvia Cartwright.

We left our poppies planted in the ground in this cross, only to discover most others were placing them at the foot of the cenotaph where the wreaths had been laid.

On the way home I spotted a cat on the road, which I could see was obviously still alive, but looked unable to move. It was dreadful - we did a U-ey round the roundabout and went back to see if there was anything to be done. I lifted him off the road (a GREAT big grey fluffy tabby), and he squirmed away with only his front end working. Poor baby. Went door knocking (at 7am, you understand!) till I found his owner, who was understandably distraught. By then she had a couple of neighbours to support her, so off we went, and off they went to the vet. Spare a thought for some random woman called Allison, who will be feeling very sad this morning - I don't know if "Fester" (what a dreadful name!) will make it. My Honey got hit by a car about 5 years ago, and she's as bouncy as anything now - well, apart from that she's now 10, and sleeps most of the day on my bed in the sun. I would have hated if she had been left on the road like that for someone else to run over later.

Ballooning

Have returned tonight from the "Balloons over Waikato" festival. I was particularly keen to see the "night glow", where they inflate a bunch of the balloons, and then light them up in time with various music clips. There was a scarecrow, a barn complete with animals and grain silo, an enormous bunch of tulips in a vase & a bunch of others, including the one we are going up in today fortnight - all being well this time with the wind!

This morning, we got up at some ridiculous hour and chased the balloons across the city to where they were all landing on a park across town. All, that is, except for the one that landed in someone's front drive, and the balloon itself seemed to swallow up the cars on the road as they hurried to deflate it and pack it up. Highly amusing.

Not as amusing, apparently, as the sight of me in nighty and dressing gown skipping across the bridge to get a better photo from the other side. I made sure at least one of my photos included a woman in her pj's, just so I could demonstrate I wasn't the only one to leave the house in a hurry!!! The view of the balloons along the river was brilliant, and we found a series of bridges to view them from. It whetted my appetite for our expedition coming up!

Tops!

Wow! one of the most amazing students I have ever had the pleasure to know, has just been announced as top scholar for the country (secondary school). (and of course it looks good for my school, too!!!) It's worth $15,000/year for the next 3 years. Again WOW!!! I am so thrilled for her, and a more personable, thoughtful and conscientious person you'd be hard pushed to meet.

WOW!

Just connected my broadband modem. Cor - who'd have thought the internet could be SO fast!!

Sigh...

Not impressed at waking not long after 3am this morning, and now here I am, up & at 'em. Grrrrr. I gave up about 4 and started reading. And now, since I'm still not apparently getting back to sleep, I thought I may as well get up and do some work. Grrrrr!

Oh well....

Tis all very well to have had a front row seat, at the best match the local team have played all season......

BUT...

I hadn't picked them to win, in the aforementioned competition. What a strange feeling, to be so excited about the (nearly) try-scoring happening right in front of us, yet well aware that this amazing and excellent slaughter of the team leading the competition was being matched by my own toppling, as I'm sure that most of the rest of our staff will have loyally picked the local team to win. Won't they??

Rugby

I'm amusing myself, at present, as much as anyone else, by being in the (co-)lead for the 4th week running (out of about 40 people) in the ongoing Super12 picks competition we're having at school. It helped that one week I got all my picks right, and hence 2 bonus points. I think the greatest joy is beating the pants off the coach of the 1st XV. He & I are on duty before school Friday mornings, over in the underground carpark at the shopping centre across the road, so discussing our picks for the week has become a hot topic of conversation. It's pretty entertaining. Much more entertaining than interrupting whatever deals and blegh behaviour we are there to prevent!

Annoyed...

I wrote a post on Tuesday, which seems to have got lost in cyberspace. Ah well.. here goes again!
Last weekend, we put on a service on Friday night, based around the seven last sayings of Jesus on the cross - the UK REJESUS website was a rich resource, with thanks to Mark Pierson for the loan of his copy of the CD.

I was responsible for the station for saying #6, the one where Jesus said "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit". Interestingly, the interpretation on the Rejesus site was of Jesus being angry, but I chose to interpret it along the lines of there being no safer hands that he, or we, could be in. So my painting was titled "No Safer Hands":

Now, of course, I'm not quite sure what to do with it. I'm thinking I might try and sell it on TradeMe!!

Jumped..

...ship, that is, to Firefox.
I went to a conference the other week, and the speaker at one of the workshops I went to introduced us to it. Up till now I'd just heard of it, but now I'm converted! I love the tabs. I love that my taskbar is uncluttered. I like the look, and I was really impressed at it importing my bookmarks & history and passwords. wheeeee!!!!!

Yummy Washing

How sad is this?
Recently, I was being visited by a travelling Brit, who asked what I'd like him to bring me, that I couldn't get here.
So, the thinking cap went on, as it does, on these occasions.
Sure, McVities Gold bars are scrummy.
Horlicks Lite & Ribena Lite likewise, and both unavailable here, although their non-lite counterparts are.
But, I think I really had him when I asked if he thought he'd have room for Ariel Liquid.
I could almost hear the communal familial headshaking and shouldershrugging going on.
My ears were even a bit pink.
However, it has to be said, there is NOTHING available on the shelves here (in the liquid laundry detergent range) that doesn't smell totally foul and toxic.
So, I shall continue to enjoy the yummy washing smell, until the bottle is all gone, as I contemplate how on earth I'm going to access an ongoing supply!

FINISHED!

Well, finished "a" task, anyway!!!
At 5.15pm I completed the 44 page Annual Report to the Board for my department. I've been working since 5.15am today, so am I EVER glad it's a LOOOOOOONG weekend. Whatever trick of the calendar saw fit to give NZ schools Easter Tuesday off as well as Monday, I'm ever so thankful to it!!!
I couldn't really start on my report till I had worked with the new Head of Faculty on the faculty report, since that was my baby, effectively, till he took over in January. Boy, are we having some trials at the moment, but I'm soooo pleased with the way we are working as a team to deal with them! It's my very real hope that now this hurdle is out of the way, things really will, finally, settle!
boy, I sure do hope so.
My Mum gave me a cool book of "hopeful sayings" for my birthday - I liked this one:
"Hope is the feeling we have that the feeling we have is not permanent"
credited to Mignon McLaughlin
(cor!!! what a cool name.. reminds me of a scotch-cut sirloin steak!)
